New Delhi: On the call of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and other organisations, millions of peasants, workers and oppressed people across the country on Sunday observed Quit India Day as ‘Save India Day’ to protest against the government’s brazen privatisation drive. Staging demonstrations, they raised slogans like ‘India Not For Sale’, ‘Stop Corporate Loot’ and ‘Corporate Looters Quit India’.
Former MP and general secretary of AIKS, Hannan Mollah said the organisation’s call received overwhelming response from the peasantry as well as the workers across the country. It called upon the people to observe 9th August as Save India Day which is marked as Quit India Movement Day against the colonial British government.
The reports received so far at the AIKS centre show that there was massive participation in which the entire family members of the peasants and workers participated in the strike action including Satyagraha/Jail Bharo /Demonstrations, he added.
Thousands of the people are still under detention in many parts of the country for participating in the struggle.
As per the reports the protest action was observed in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Kerala, Gujarat, Uttarakhand, Tripura, Jharkhand, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan and Bihar. West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Karnataka and a few other States will hold protests tomorrow. In Jammu & Kashmir the leaders were kept confined to their houses by the repressive administration and not allowed to protest.
An unprecedented solidarity and unity was witnessed in the actions across different organisations. The protest gained wide appreciation in the background of the neoliberal offensive on agriculture and labour by the BJP Government led by Narendra Modi and also the failure to ensure relief to the toiling masses including the migrant workers and poor peasants who are facing the brunt of Covid -19 pandemic and lockdown.
The massive response where workers, peasants, agricultural workers and all oppressed united point to the possibility of rallying the masses around a strong worker-peasant alliance and for building rock-solid resistance against neoliberal policies and authoritarian attacks. AIKS congratulates all sections of people who have made the protest action a huge success.
The central leadership of the AIKS including General Secretary Hannan Mollah, Joint Secretary Vijoo Krishnan and P Krishnaparasad Finance Secretary attended the massive protest held at Jantar Mantar under the banner of AIKSCC and CTU. This was the first ever mass protest on Parliament Street after the Lockdown came into force.
The CITU, AIAWU and AIKS had decided jointly for a united protest on 9th August and carried out widespread campaigns across the country. The Central Trade Unions, All India Kisan Coordination Committee, Bhumi Adhikar Andolan as well as different mass organisations also decided to have coordinated action on the same day.
