New Delhi, July 7: Welfare Party of India has supported the Supreme Court’s direction to Election Commission of India to frame guidelines to include election manifestos of political parties under model code of conduct.
WPI General Secretary Dr. S. Q. R. Ilyas has endorsed SC observation that freebies “shakes the root of free and fair elections”. It has become a rampant unethical practice for political parties to announce freebies worth multi-crores to win elections and transfer the burden on common citizens. Welfare Party is of the view that such announcements be termed as “corrupt and unethical practices” and should be treated as election offence.
The party also demanded to make political parties accountable for their manifestos and asked to set up an independent authority under EC with judicial powers to monitor enactment of poll promises made in election manifestos by the parties and made its stand clear that failures in this regard be made an offence.
