Donald Trump accused US President Joe Biden of being soft on Hamas and Biden defended his support for Israel during the first presidential debate of this year’s election campaign.
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump sparked outrage during the first presidential debate on Thursday, labeling his opponent Joe Biden as a “bad Palestinian” in the CNN studio in Atlanta, Georgia.
The controversial remark came as Trump criticised Biden’s stance on Israel’s military action in Gaza, saying, “He doesn’t want to do it. He’s become like a Palestinian – but they don’t like him because he’s a very bad Palestinian, he’s a weak one.”
The comment drew swift criticism for its perceived racist connotations, with analysts noting the gravity of using “Palestinian” as a pejorative term. Trump’s remark overshadowed the debate’s discussion on the Israel’s war on Gaza, which saw the candidates present divergent views. While Biden advocated for a ceasefire in Gaza, Trump pushed for continued military action.
While Trump accused US President Joe Biden of being soft on Hamas, Biden defended his support for Israel during the first presidential debate of this year’s election campaign.
Meanwhile, a pro-Palestine protest held outside the CNN studio called for an immediate ceasefire.
The debate’s contentious start set the tone for a heated presidential election.
Biden’s performance was marked by fluctuations, which gave Trump an edge in the debate, say analysts. Trump seized upon Biden’s false claim that Hamas is declining ceasefire agreements, criticising his opponent’s handling of American captives.
The debate addressed various issues, including refugee policies, abortion, economy, and foreign policy. However, the Palestinian issue was hardly included, despite its gravity.
Trump’s anti-refugee notions were also on display during the debate, sparking concern among refugee advocates. ( With Agencies Inputs )
