This year, the shadow of continued Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip looms large over Palestinians as they prepare for the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.
The bloodshed in the Gaza Strip, despite the UN Security Council’s demand for an immediate ceasefire and the International Court of Justice’s order for Israel to allow humanitarian relief and prevent genocide, has placed a pall over Eid celebrations.
Israel’s war on Gaza, which has killed about 33,360 people and wounded 75,993 others, according to Palestinian authorities, has taken a massive toll on the holiday spirit.
Despite the devastation, a large number of Palestinians who have been displaced and lost their homes and loved ones as a result of the six-month-long war went shopping for Eid al-Fitr.
Thousands of Palestinians throng the markets in some parts of Gaza to try to experience the joy of Eid despite the ongoing war.
Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip has placed a pall over Eid celebrations for Palestinians.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza is dire, with thousands of people displaced and in urgent need of assistance. The destruction of civilian infrastructure, including homes, schools, hospitals, and roads, has further exacerbated the suffering of the population. Access to basic necessities such as food, water, and medical supplies is severely restricted, adding to the already dire humanitarian crisis in the territory.
Despite these challenges, Palestinians in Gaza are determined to celebrate Eid with resilience and solidarity. In makeshift tents and temporary shelters, families gather to share meals and exchange gifts, finding solace in their faith and community bonds. However, the festive spirit is tinged with sorrow as they mourn the loss of lives and livelihoods.
International aid organizations are mobilizing to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza, delivering emergency aid such as food, shelter, and medical supplies to those in need. However, the scale of the destruction and the ongoing blockade imposed by Israel present significant obstacles to relief efforts.
The situation in Gaza underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive and sustainable solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The cycle of violence and suffering must be broken through dialogue, negotiation, and respect for international law. Both sides must prioritize the well-being and rights of civilians, ensuring their safety and security.
Israeli military claims to strike dozens of targets in Gaza leading up to Eid
Israeli air attacks have hit dozens of targets in Gaza in the last day, including “military sites, launchers, tunnel shafts, and infrastructure”, said the Israeli military in its latest war update.
The military specifically struck sites in Jabalia and Gaza City’s Shujaya neighbourhood, where it determined strikes towards Israel or Israeli troops had been carried out, according to the Israeli military
The latest attacks also targeted several “terrorist cells”, according to the Israeli military, killing numerous fighters.
Israel’s attacks in Gaza at the end of Ramadan also had a heavy civilian toll, including killing at least four children in an air strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp, according to rescuers.
