Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, Jammu and Kashmir (TeH), a separatist group, has been declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to social media to make the announcement, stating, “The Tehreek-e-Hurriyat, J&K (TeH) has been declared an ‘Unlawful Association’ under UAPA.”
He further said, “The outfit is involved in forbidden activities to separate J&K from India and establish Islamic rule. The group is found spreading anti-India propaganda and continuing terror activities to fuel secessionism in J&K.”

Shah said that the Modi government had a zero-tolerance policy against terrorism, asserting that any individual or organization engaged in anti-India activities would be thwarted under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
TeH, founded in 2004 by separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was a part of the larger Hurriyat Conference. The group was formed in 1993 with 26 groups, including Jamaat-e-Islami, JKLF, and Dukhtaran-e-Millat.
The Hurriyat Conference split into two factions in 2005, with a moderate group led by Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and a hardline group led by Geelani. The recent ban follows the 2019 prohibition of Jamaat-e-Islami and JKLF under UAPA.
Officials said that investigations into terror funding implicated secessionist and separatist leaders, including Hurriyat Conference members. Alleged involvement in raising funds through illegal channels like hawala for separatist and terrorist activities in Jammu and Kashmir was cited as a reason for the ban.
Several arrests were made in connection with terror funding, with individuals like Altaf Ahmed Shah, Zahoor Ahmed Watali, Ayaz Akbar, and others facing legal consequences.
