New Delhi, Feb 29: The death toll in the communal riots in northeast Delhi has now reached 43. This includes two security personnel, a Delhi Police head constable and an IB official. While no cases of violence have been recorded over the past 24 hours, the death toll has been going up due to discovery of bodies dumped during the riots. Also, some of the severely injured people have also succumbed to injuries and this has also contributed to the rising death toll.
Feb 29 :
Delhi Police on Saturday said that no PCR call of violence was received on Saturday. The statement further stated that a total of 167 FIRs have been registered as on February 29, out of which 36 cases have been registered under the Arms Act. As many as 885 people have been either detained or arrested in connection with the violence that erupted in North East district earlier this month. In addition, 13 cases have been registered against accounts operating on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram among others.
In the wake of widespread violence in Delhi’s North East district, a delegation of the National Commission for Minorities led by its chief Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi visited affected areas on Saturday. In a statement, Rizvi said that the delegation met injured victims of both communities and wished them a speedy recovery. “The purpose of this visit was to re-establish mutual goodwill, love and brotherhood among all communities,” he told news agency PTI.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has formed a fact-finding committee to probe recent cases of violence in Delhi’s North East district, said an official. More than 40 people have lost their lives and at least 200 incurred injuries as rioters took to the streets in Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Babarpur, Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura, Chand Bagh and Shiv Vihar.
Six boys who shouted, “Desh ke gaddaron ko, goli maaro s**lon ko [Shoot the country’s traitors]” at Delhi’s Rajiv Chowk metro station today have been detained. Read the full story here.
Anurag Thakur, a central BJP minister, has come under severe fire for leading the same chant at a rally before the Delhi assembly election. He was temporarily banned from campaigning and faced angry slogans from the Opposition in Parliament after a spate of shootings (none of them fatal) took place near the Shaheen Bagh protest site. As well, the Delhi Police and Centre have been given around a month to respond to a plea seeking FIRs against him and other BJP leaders for making hate speeches in the weeks leading up to the recent violence in northeast Delhi.
The Border Security Force (BSF) has learned from news reports that the home of one of its constables, Mohd Anees, was gutted during the violence in northeast Delhi, and says the force will help rebuild it. Anees himself didn’t inform his seniors about what happened. The BSF has told India Today TV that it will also provide the constable’s family with financial help.
Under fire for the deadly violence that broke out in Delhi on his watch, Home Minister Amit Shah says he wants to reiterate that the amended citizenship law won’t strip Muslims of their citizenship. Shah has faced calls for his resignation — including one from the Congress party — in the wake of the violence.
The administration of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has warned its students’ union, known as JNUSU, against giving victims of the violence in northeast Delhi shelter. The union has “no legal right to make the JNU campus a shelter,” a notice from the registrar, Pramod Kumar, said.
“You are strictly advised against any such activity, failing which appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against you. You are also advised to uphold the need to keep an educational institution like JNU a congenial space for study and research,” it said.
The notice said campus residents had placed several calls to the administration to say they felt insecure as a result as the JNUSU’s offer of shelter.
On February 26, the union posted a message on its Twitter page saying the JNU campus and JNUSU office were “open to all the people who need shelter”.

OIC condemns ‘anti-Muslim’ violence in India
The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Thursday urged the Indian government to stop “anti-Muslim violence” and the desecration of Islamic places of worship in the country.
The OIC statement came as the death toll in ongoing riots in India’s capital New Delhi climbed to 34, with nearly 200 injured.
“OIC condemns the recent and alarming violence against Muslims in India, resulting in the death and injury of innocent people and the arson and vandalism of mosques and Muslim-owned properties,” read the statement.

Turkey president denounces “massacres” committed against Muslims in India
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hit out Thursday against “massacres” of Muslims in India after communal violence in New Delhi left at least 38 dead.
“India right now has become a country where massacres are widespread. What massacres? Massacres of Muslims. By who? Hindus,” President Erdogan said during a speech in Ankara after violence broke out this week between mobs of Hindus and Muslims over a citizenship law.
Pleas filed in Delhi HC seeking FIR against Sonia, Rahul, Priyanka, Sisodia and Akbaruddinfor hate speech
Pleas were moved in the Delhi High court on Thursday seeking lodging of FIR against Congress president Sonia Gandhi, former president Rahul Gandhi, its general secretary Priyanka Vadra and others for allegedly giving hate speeches.
One of the pleas has sought registration of FIR against Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia and Aam Aadmi Party leader Amanatullah Khan for allegedly making hate speeches.
US commission on religious freedom says Delhi violence targeting Muslims
The US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has said that the Delhi violence in which over 30 people were killed, was specifically targeted against the Muslims.
Expressing “grave concern over the ongoing violence taking place in Delhi”, the USCIRF in a statement said that as President Donald Trump’s inaugural visit to India winds down, North-East Delhi has been rocked by deadly rioting, with reports of violence and mobs specifically targeting Muslims.
The Shiv Sena has slammed the Centre over violence in northeast Delhi. In Saamana, the Shiv Sena said Delhi is burning and Home Minister Amit Shah is seen nowhere. Hyper nationalism and communalism are taking the country 100 years behind, the Shiv Sena said.
On the transfer of Delhi HC judge, the Sena said the government punished him after he ordered FIRs against Union Minister, Anurag Thakur, MP Parvesh Verma and Kapil Mishra.
The AAP suspended its councillor Tahir Hussain, who is accused of being involved in the killing of an IB staffer, from the primary membership of the party till the police probe is complete, party sources said.
The family of an Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma (26), who was found dead in a drain near his home in northeast Delhi’s riot-hit Chand Bagh area, has accused Tahir Hussain of being behind the killing. On the complaint of Ankit’s father, the police have registered an FIR against Hussain, who has rejected the charge.
AAP sources said Hussain has been suspended from the primary membership of the party till police finish their probe.
National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval left from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) after his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Home Secretary Ajay Kumar Bhalla and Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik were also present during the meeting. During this meeting, NSA Doval gave a detailed description of the violence-prone area to the Shah.
He also told the Shah that the situation in Delhi is now becoming normal and there is peace.
Superstar Rajinikanth on Wednesday lashed out at the Narendra Modi-led central government over the violence in Delhi that left 22 people dead, saying the riots should have been dealt with an iron fist.
“Definitely it is central government’s intelligence failure. I strongly condemn the central government,” he said.
The Delhi Police today said it has filed 18 FIRs and arrested 106 people so far in connection with the riots that broke out in North East Delhi on Monday.
Without answering any questions from the media, Delhi Police PRO said more arrests will be made in the coming days. The police claimed that the situation in the riot-torn areas is “under control”.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said Union Home Minister Amit Shah is “directly responsible” for the violence in Delhi. Sonia Gandhi said, “The home minister is directly responsible for the violence in Delhi and must resign.”
Government sources have told India Today that Army will not be called in the national capital. Enough paramilitary forces have been deployed in Delhi, the sources said.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Delhi Police saying there was lack of professionalism. The SC said had the police acted in accordance with the law, many problems wouldn’t have taken place.
These things would not have happened had police not allowed instigators to get away, the Supreme Court said. Justice Joseph gave example of police in the US and UK, anbd said that force has to act professionally as per law if something goes wrong.
Observing that the violence in Delhi is akin to a “horror film” depicting the grim reality of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said the “bloodbath” has brought disrepute to the national capital like never before while US President Donald Trump was in India with the “message of love”.
The editorial in party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’ lamented that Trump was welcomed in Delhi while there was bloodbath on the streets.

11: 04 AM Kejriwal demands Army deployment
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday said that the situation in northeast Delhi is alarming and the police have been unable to control the situation, despite all efforts. Kejriwal said the Army should be called in Delhi now and he will write to Home Minister Amit Shah regarding this.
“I have been in touch with large no of people the whole night. Situation alarming. Police, despite all its efforts, unable to control situation and instil confidence. Army shud be called in and curfew imposed in rest of affected areas immediately. I am writing to Hon’ble HM [Amit Shah] to this effect,” CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted.

3: 30 AM : Police used water canon on students
A large crowd, mainly students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia gathered outside CM Arvind Kejriwal’s residence late last night, demanding action against the perpetrators of the violence. Delhi Police used water cannons and dispersed the crowd by 3:30 am.
Students of JNU and Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia (AAJMI) and Jamia Coordination Committee organised a demonstration outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s residence late on Tuesday night. People gathered outside the CM’s residence demanding action against Delhi violence and sought restoration of peace. Police disperse the people who had gathered outside Arvind Kejriwal’s residence who were demanding action to check Delhi violence.
1: 00 AM : Delhi High Court notice to police over violence
The Delhi High Court, in a late-night order, asked the police to ensure safe passage and emergency treatment for those injured in the unprecedented violence in the capital since for the last three days. The hearing by a two-judge bench of the Delhi High Court took place at the residence of Justice S Murlidhar. The court was hearing an urgent petition seeking safe passage for the injured to medical institutions with adequate facilities. The court will take up the case again at 2:15 pm today.
