Judge who rejected P Chidambaram’s bail appointed the chairperson of the PMLA Appellate Tribunal.
In a decision which appears to be as a well oiled plan to many, Judge Sunil Gaur of the Delhi High Court, who rejected Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s bail has been appointed the chairperson of the PMLA Appellate Tribunal.
Notably, three days before retirement, Justice Gaur had denied anticipatory bail to former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram by terming him the “kingpin and key conspirator” of the INX Media scam case.
The bail rejection order passed by the former Delhi high court judge has over the last few days been debated extensively in the Supreme Court and the special CBI court at Rouse Avenue Court Complex. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal alleged that Justice Gaur had merely “copy-pasted” the accusations passed to him in a sealed cover by solicitor general Tushar Mehta.
Earlier, he had also passed an order clearing the decks for prosecution of top Congress leaders, including Sonia and Rahul Gandhi, in the National Herald case. Justice Gaur was elevated to the high court in April 2008. He was designated as a permanent judge on April 11, 2012.
Gaur also heard another high-profile case involving Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath’s nephew Ratul Puri, who is an accused in a money laundering case related to the AgustaWestland helicopter scam. His anticipatory bail application was also dismissed.

In his over-three-decade long legal career, Justice Gaur adjudged several high profile cases. His area of expertise lay in dealing with corruption cases, including the money laundering case against controversial meat exporter Moin Qureshi that drove a wedge inside the CBI last year.
