BNP, the main opposition party in Bangladesh, and the parties involved in the simultaneous movement against the rulling party have announced that the next program after January 1 will be strict in the new year. In this case, two types of programs are being considered. One is a continuous strike or blockade program from January 2 to January 8, the day following the election, or a two-day break in between them—first a blockade, then a hartal program. However, none has been finalized yet.
According to reliable sources from BNP, the mass communication and leaflet distribution program is ongoing on, and it started with the aim of building public opinion on boycotting the vote. So far, more than 5 million leaflets have been distributed from all organizational units across the country. The program has been extended until tomorrow, Monday.
The party’s senior joint general secretary, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, is distributing leaflets somewhere in the capital every day. Yesterday morning, he distributed mass communication and leaflets among the shopkeepers and passers-by in Sector 12 and 13 areas of Uttara Dhaka.
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi told Muslimmirror the previous night, ‘BNP and opposition parties have to distribute boycott leaflets while avoiding police attention. I have been distributing leaflets for a few days in different parts of the capital. The unimaginable positive response of ordinary people holding leaflets in their hands on the streets, sidewalks, and markets is noteworthy.
BNP started this program on December 20. Over the course of eight days in three phases, they have organized mass communication and leaflet distribution throughout the country, calling for boycotting the vote. The program will continue for 10 days, including today and tomorrow. After that, they will move on to the new program. Apart from BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and other parties and alliances are conducting similar programs separately.
According to Jamaat sources, they have planned to distribute leaflets to at least 10 percent of the total voters from 87 organizational units across the country, calling for the boycott of the elections. Apart from this, various parties, including Democracy Manch Alliance, 12-Party Alliance, Nationalist Samajbadi Alliance, LDP, JSD, Gano Forum, Gana Odhikar Parishad, and Labor Party, are carrying out this program.
Since the police foiled BNP’s grand rally in Nayapaltan on October 28, the parties and alliances in the simultaneous movement, along with the BNP, have held a four-phase 5-day strike and a 12-phase 23-day blockade. In response, BNP announced the fourth round of the mass communication and pamphlet distribution program, calling for the boycott of the elections and non-cooperation against the government.
