The Israeli airstrikes on the besieged Gaza Strip have resulted in the destruction of five more mosques, bringing the total number to 31 since October 7th, as reported by the Gaza-based Endowments and Religious Affairs Ministry.
“The number of mosques completely destroyed since the beginning of Israel’s attacks on Gaza has increased to 31,” stated the ministry on Sunday.
The ministry also reported that the Israeli bombardment extended to several civilian sites, including their own headquarters, the ministry’s Quran radio station, and a church. 10 employees from the ministry lost their lives in these attacks, and others sustained injuries.
Furthermore, the government media office in the Gaza Strip revealed that Israeli strikes have caused significant damage to three churches. At least three churches suffered “serious” harm in these attacks. In addition to places of worship, approximately half of all dwellings in the Gaza Strip have been either partially or entirely damaged during the past two weeks of relentless airstrikes.
The conflict in Gaza, which has been under Israeli bombardment and blockade since October 7, originated when Hamas initiated “Operation Al-Aqsa Flood.” This multi-pronged surprise attack by Hamas included rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air. Hamas stated that this incursion was in retaliation for the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and escalating violence by Israeli settlers.
In response, the Israeli military launched “Operation Swords of Iron” against Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip. The toll on civilians and infrastructure has been devastating. To date, at least 4,651 Palestinians, including 1,873 children, have lost their lives in Israeli attacks on Gaza, while in Israel, the figure stands at more than 1,400 people.
