Eminent experts and faculty members deliberated upon the issues related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its applications including machine learning and deep learning, as well as computational intelligence and its role in decision-making and data mining, in the two-day International Conference on Emerging Computational Intelligence (ICECI-2023), organized by the Department of Computer Science, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).
Addressing the inaugural session of the conference at the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Auditorium (JNMC), the chief guest Prof. Wasim Ahmad, Director, Academic Programmes Committee, AMU spoke about how Aligarh Muslim University was a pioneer in introducing computerization by being the first university to provide computerized report cards in 1975. “The university went from having one computer centre to three completely different units at the time”, he stated.
Prof Wasim Ahmad described the rapid advancement of technology, particularly in the field of artificial intelligence, cyber security, ground computing and other ongoing research in this area in India.
He also talked about the improving world rank of the university, specially the Department of Computer Science.
Speaking as the guest of honour, Prof. M. Salim Beg mentioned the achievements of the Department and its success in research and teaching activities. “The improved ranking of the Department in world rankings including the Times Higher Education, UK, and quality research and teaching activities are matters of pride for the Department and the University”, He said.
Prof Beg further said the Department of Computer Science was among the seven Departments of the university that were mentioned in the Times Higher Education list.
He also shared his views on how AI is shaping the future and the role of researchers in contributing to this rapidly growing field. “In the coming years, the field of computational intelligence will grow faster and will have a part in all aspects of life” he added.
The keynote speaker Prof. Abdul Quaiyum Ansari, Professor, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi delved into the history of the Master of Computer Applications (MCA) programme and its introduction to the academic world.
“India is celebrating ‘Aazadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and also the presidency of the G-20, but along with these, the nation also needs to celebrate the success of computer science in India”, he pointed out.
He discussed the advancements made in the field and shared his memory of using the WAX 11 machine. He also highlighted the current state of research in artificial intelligence and its progress in India.
Earlier, convenor of the conference Prof. Aasim Zafar, Chairman, Department of Computer Science introduced the guests, and presented an overview of the programme.
“The conference will give an opportunity to the participants to widen their perspectives by learning about cutting-edge research, network with peers, and participate in thought-provoking conversations. The two day programme will have 15 sessions, including ten technical sessions and two plenary sessions”, he said.
