New Delhi: The Delhi Police have suspended the station house officer (SHO) of Adarsh Nagar police station, C. P. Bhardwaj, days after he prevented some Hindutva men from harassing a Muslim man, who is the head of a mazar in Delhi.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, two saffron clad men are seen intimidating the Muslim man as they claim that the mazar is an illegal structure. In the meantime, the SHO intervenes in the matter and sternly tells the Hindutva men not to confront the Muslim man. Any complaints about unauthorised religious structures, SHO Bharadwaj tells them, can be made by approaching the appropriate committee of the Delhi government and not by creating a scene in public.
“According to a Supreme Court ruling, the Delhi government has established a religious committee to settle (disputes or complaints around) such structures,” he said. Then, pointing to the youth with the saffron scarf, he says, “If this gentleman has any problem, he shall move a representation to the Delhi government”.
At this the youth with the saffron scarf is seen arguing with the officer that “what about the razing of the temple in Chandni Chowk, what do you have to say about it”. His charge is that the temple was razed overnight by the police and administration.
This time the officer replies authoritatively that “you please speak to me about the constitutional arrangement”.
“You will not bully any citizen or religious person like this. You have no right,” he added
The Delhi Police said SHO Bhardwaj was suspended for ‘dereliction of duty’ and that there are a number of ‘complaints against him. However, his suspension is being linked to the aforementioned incident.
This has evoked a sharp response with eminent citizens claiming that he is being punished for protecting a Muslim man.
Former BBC journalist and founder of Janta Ka Reporter, Rifat Jawaid said, ”Remember the upright inspector from the Delhi Police, CP Bhardwaj, who bravely stopped a Hindutva goon from bullying a Muslim? He’s been suspended! This is how rule of law would be established in India. The message is clear.”
