The inauguration of the Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi, facilitated by the generous donation of land by the ruler of Abu Dhabi, was indeed a remarkable display of communal harmony. Prime Minister Modi’s participation in this event underscored the significance of religious inclusivity and cooperation on an international scale. The temple, built by the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS), symbolizes the shared values of harmony, peace, and tolerance between India and the UAE.
However, juxtaposed against this display of unity is the troubling reality of mosque demolitions occurring in India, particularly in states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Recent reports have highlighted the demolition of mosques, madrasas, and graveyards, with even centuries-old mosque being razed to the ground in the name of encroachment removal. These actions have sparked widespread condemnation and raised serious concerns about religious freedom and minority rights in India.
Amnesty International‘s findings point to a distressing pattern of punitive demolitions targeting predominantly Muslim structures, particularly in BJP-ruled states. The disregard for due process and the rule of law in these instances further exacerbates tensions and undermines the principles of democracy and secularism enshrined in India’s constitution.
Moreover, the alarming rise in mob lynching incidents targeting Muslims by right-wing Hindutva groups adds another layer of complexity to the communal landscape in India. Cow vigilantism, often fueled by religious and ideological fervor, has claimed the lives of hundreds of individuals from minority communities since Modi’s ascension to power.
Amidst the celebrations of religious inclusivity in Abu Dhabi, it is imperative to confront the stark realities faced by Muslims in India. The demolition of mosques and the unchecked violence perpetrated against minority communities demand urgent attention and action from the Indian government and society at large.
While the inauguration of the Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi symbolizes the potential for peaceful coexistence and mutual respect among different faiths, it also serves as a reminder of the work that remains to be done in addressing religious discrimination and intolerance at home. True harmony can only be achieved through genuine efforts to safeguard the rights and dignity of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs.
The juxtaposition of the inauguration of the Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi with the mosque demolitions in India highlights both the progress made in fostering interfaith understanding and the challenges that persist in achieving true religious harmony. It is incumbent upon leaders and citizens alike to uphold the principles of secularism, pluralism, and equality enshrined in India’s constitution, ensuring that all individuals can practice their faith freely and without fear of persecution. Only through genuine dialogue, empathy, and respect for diversity can lasting peace and harmony be realized in our societies.
