Communal violence in Kolkata’s Mominpur, over 30 detained

KOLKATA : More than 35 people have been detained in connection with sporadic clashes that broke out between two communities in South Kolkata’s Mominpur, sources said on Monday.

A huge police contingent has been deployed in the troubled area to prevent further eruption of clashes that started late on Sunday night. and continued till Monday morning. Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure has been imposed for three days in the area from Oct 10 till October 12, according to reports.

Clash over Milad un-Nabi flags

According to various reports, a clash between the communities on the night of October 8 over Milad-un-Nabi flags. According to the police, the violence ensued on Sunday night after religious flags put up for Milad un-Nabi were allegedly torn down obviously by other community members. The next night, a group of people ransacked many houses on the Mayurbhanj and Bhukailash roads.

Vehicles were vandalised and people hurled stones in Kolkatas Mominpur area on Sunday, say reports.

Thirty-eight people have been detained for creating a ruckus in the area.

Several policemen have been injured in the violence, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Soumya Roy, who was hit by a crude bomb, reports India Today.

BJP state president arrested

Five people, including BJP state president and party MP Sukanta Majumdar have been arrested in connection with the violence.

On Monday, after the Sukanta Majumdar started moving towards the troubled zone, a huge police contingent stopped him from approaching that spot and was detained.

Leader of the opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah demanding deployment of central forces personnel at the troubled zones in the city. He also criticised the city police detaining Sukanta Majumdar and denying his democratic right to reach the troubled zone. “Try as much as you can. But you will not be able to stop the BJP,” Adhikari said. — IANS
