New Delhi: On June 22, 2021, residents of Namanjoypara village suspected Jayed Hossain (30), Billal Miah (28) and Saiful Islam (18) of carrying five cattle in a vehicle in the early hours of Sunday. Later on, a mob stopped their vehicle near Uttar Maharanipur village, about 10 kilometres away, and assaulted the three men. Islam, one of the three men, managed to flee the site, but was caught later at Mungiakami village.

Reportedly, the three men were taken to local primary health centres and later to Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital at Agartala, where they were declared brought dead. A case against unknown people for mob lynching has been registered in Kalyanpur police station, but nobody has been arrested yet.

Against the incident of mob lynching, human rights organisation the National Confederation of Human Rights Organisations filed a complaint in the State Human Rights Commission on June 22, 2021. The complaint was filed by the coordinator of the Delhi chapter of NCHRO, Ishu Jaiswal.

The cases of mob lynching have seen an increase across the country after the BJP came to power, and in the state of Tripura as well, the case in question is preceded by a number of similar cases of mob lynching. We have urged the SHRC to look into the case and ensure a fair trial.
