Lucknow: Controversy has erupted in Uttar Pradesh’s capital, Lucknow, following the appointment of Dr. Srikanth Srivastva, a British national, as the head of the University Grants Commission (UGC) cell at King George’s Medical University (KGMU). Dr. Srivastva’s appointment on June 8, 2023, has triggered a wave of criticism and calls for a thorough investigation into the matter.
Dr. Srivastva, who had been associated with the university since 2010 and held the position of Head of the Old Age Mental Department, has come under intense scrutiny for his appointment.
The Danish Khan Foundation, led by prominent RTI activist Danish Khan, has raised concerns about the appropriateness of this decision. The Foundation has said that “there is a need to examine the existing evidence in depth.”
Speaking anonymously to Muslim Mirror, a local journalist shed light on the situation, suggesting that political motivations and connections played a significant role in Dr. Srivastva’s appointment as the head of the UGC cell.
“He lacks an Indian passport or any Indian documentation, shouldn’t this warrant government investigation? How is it feasible for a British national to be selected for such a significant position?” he said.
The journalist questioned Dr. Srivastva’s eligibility, pointing out his British nationality and lack of Indian documentation. He further questioned the government’s apparent oversight of such a crucial appointment, particularly in light of the Yogi government’s commitment to “Zero Tolerance.”
The controversy has been further exacerbated by allegations from Dr. Srivastva’s past. Accusations of sexual harassment and intentionally failing students have cast a shadow over his professional history.
In a report published by Dainik Jagran, a prominent local newspaper, a top-performing student of KGMU accused Dr. Srivastva of deliberately failing her during a viva examination. The same student also alleged mental and sexual harassment by another teacher.
The developments have sparked public outrage and ignited discussions about the transparency and accountability of the university administration.
Is this a joke?
