Guwahati, April 3: Educational Research & Development Foundation (ERDF) on Tuesday presented its maiden Community Leadership Award to 27 persons from the Muslim Minority Community of Assam. Union Minority Affairs Minister K Rahman Khan gave away the awards.
Speaking at the occasion, Mr. Khan said: The Muslim community in India should develop positive attitude and shed all negativism and assert their rights as citizens of India. Muslims in India are capable of achieving in all walks of life and reach the top as in case of APJ Abdul Kalam. He further observed that India has achieved tremendous economic growth in the recent past and poised to be one of the developed countries in the world. Muslims should come out of their psychological isolation and come forward to contribute in the process of country’s growth story. Muslims should not consider themselves as minority community but consider them as the second largest majority community in India. The minister further said that community should not feel that they are not getting their constitutional rights. The community should take blame for its backwardness as pointed out in Sachar Committee report. The government is a facilitator and not a provider. The community should come out of its shell and take the initiative to empower itself and work with the mainstream and not in isolation to take the country forward. He cited the case of Mr. Mahbubul Hoque, Chairman ERDF and Chancellor University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya and stated that Mr. Hoque, without any government financial help has created a chain of educational institutions including engineering college, technology university, professional colleges and schools in little over a decade. The Minister urged upon the community to emulate Mr. Hoque
Instituted in 2013 the Community Leadership Award aims at giving recognition to the pioneering works done by members of the Muslim Minority Community in different walks of life and contributing greatly to the life of the society adding value to the system. While working in the field of education for over a decade, ERDF realised the need for synergising the strength of the community in such a way that society is able to empower itself without look forward to the bounties from the Government for everything that is essential for society’s development. ERDF has been offering ERDF Excellence Award every year to achievers from all professions from all communities.
