Kashmiri Muslim students at Government Medical College in Jammu were physically attacked by fellow students and individuals outside the campus due to a disagreement over the “The Kerala Story.”
On May 14, Hindu students from various batches within the college hostel physically assaulted Kashmiri Muslim students. A student who joined a protest against the attack on May 15 shared that the incident originated from a disagreement in an official WhatsApp group of first-year students regarding The Kerala Story.

Umar Farooq, a 22-year-old first-year medical student, and Haseeb Ahmad, a 23-year-old fourth-year medical student, were hospitalized for their injuries.
According to Chandan Kohli, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in Jammu, an altercation occurred between certain students and individuals from outside the Government Medical College (GMC) Hostel in Jammu. “The police have taken cognizance of the matter and an investigation is going on,” he said.
The Principal of Government Medical College (GMC), Shashi Sudhan Sharma, has declared that 10 students residing in the hostel will face a two-month expulsion and attendance restrictions during the investigation into the confrontation that took place between certain students and individuals from outside the GMC hostel in Jammu.
The students contradicted the assertions made by right-wing media and stated that the media is distorting the truth by portraying the attackers as victims while depicting the Kashmiri Muslim students as the aggressors. They refuted allegations that the Kashmiri students chanted pro-Pakistani and Azadi slogans, instead accusing the outsiders of chanting slogans like “Jai Shri Ram.”
Mehbooba Mufti, the former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, accused the Indian government of endorsing and fueling violence through movies that provoke communal tensions.
“Shocking that GOI promotes & encourages violence through movies stoking communal fires. The blood of innocents is being spilled to quench the BJPs insatiable thirst for petty electoral dividends. Request @OfficeOfLGJandK ji to take cognisance & punish the culprits”, Mehbooba tweeted.
Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said, “Very distressing images of gunda elements targeting Kashmiri students in Jammu. @JmuKmrPolice must take cognisance of this & ensure those responsible are brought to book. @OfficeOfLGJandK must ensure this is done in a time-bound manner & reassure students that their safety will not be compromised at the altar of politics”.
