In a recent ‘Christian Rights Meeting’ organized by Congress leaders in Telangana, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram raised concerns about the treatment of minorities in India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s regime. He alleged that minorities were living in fear and facing discrimination.
Chidambaram stated, “The minorities live in this country in fear. You are as much a citizen in this country as I am. There is no reason for you to live in fear. But, under the Modi government, you are living in fear.”
Chidambaram pointed out that the challenges faced by all communities in India, including unemployment, inflation, decreased household savings, and increased household debt, were not being adequately addressed by either the NDA government at the Centre or the BRS government in Telangana.
He said that discrimination against minorities was a significant factor preventing them from receiving their rightful share. Chidambaram asserted, “The fourth reason is discrimination against the minorities. There is discrimination everywhere against the minorities.”
The senior Congress leader highlighted the underrepresentation of Christians in key positions, stating, “The population of Christians is 3.30 crore in the country, and there is only one Christian among 79 ministers in the Modi government.” He also noted the absence of Christians among the judges in the Supreme Court.
Chidambaram cited data from the National Crime Records Bureau, indicating that between 2017 and 2021, 2,900 incidents of communal conflict had occurred, with minorities often being the victims. He referred to media reports of alleged attacks on churches and a US government report on international religious freedom, which, according to him, claimed that religious freedom in India had worsened.
Chidambaram also discussed the cancellation of the FCRA (Foreign Contributions Regulation Act) registration of 6,622 organizations by the NDA government between 2017 and 2022. He criticized the government for this move and emphasized that many charitable organizations, including Christian ones, received funds from foreign countries during Congress’s tenure.
Furthermore, Chidambaram expressed concerns about the state of India’s democracy, stating, “India’s democracy is under attack.” He warned that minorities would be among the worst sufferers if democracy declined in the country.
Regarding the economic situation, he mentioned that inflation had remained above six percent for the last 20 months, with food inflation reaching 9.2 percent. Chidambaram emphasized that this high inflation adversely affected everyone, especially the poor.
He is absolutely right
Minorities are second class citizens in India now
They are labelled as useless fake and traitors
Only change in ruling regime can revert their present unfortunate situation
