New Delhi: A group of men on Saturday barged into a mosque and assaulted the imam as well as worshippers at Rampur Majra village in Greater Noida near Delhi. The incident took place around 8:30pm, when people were offering their evening prayers.
The police have registered a case against unidentified men invoking sections 147, 148 (rioting), 336 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 295 (defiling place of worship) and 296 (disturbing religious assembly).
According to the police, the attack took place in the wake of a quarrel between two sides of the same village.
Hindustan Times cited a local Raisuddin, relative of one of the persons injured in the incident, who said that a youth from their community allegedly had an argument with a woman from another community on Friday.
The women, according to report, complained about the argument with her family members who then went to the Muslim locality where they threatened them of “teaching them a lesson”.
“At night, however, they orchestrated the attack and injured the Imam, Nasir Muhammad, and my relative Fateh Mohammad, who was offering prayers, at the mosque,” Raisuddin said.
The youth who argued with the woman had no connection with the Imam and his relative, Raisuddin said.
