Lucknow, April 10: Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav has been nominated visitor of Maulana Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, Rampur. Confirming this development, State cabinet minister and founder of the university Azam Khan said that Mr. Yadav has accepted his proposal.
Mr. Khan had written a letter to Mulayam Singh Yadav requesting him to accept the post of visitor which he did happily. In his letter while accepting the proposal, Mulayam wrote that it his privilege to be associated with Jauhar University.
SP chief had inaugurated the university on September 18 last year in a grand ceremony. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav was the chief guest on the occasion.
The setting up of the university encountered several hiccups when the project was conceived in 2006 and Mulayam Singh Yadav was the chief minister with the then governor T V Rajeshwar withholding assent to the university bill. More trouble followed when the BSP government was formed in 2007. It denied permission to start the university, even though it allowed an engineering college to function. But that did not deter Azam Khan as he decided to get the institution a private status and himself became the trustee and chancellor of the university.
The SP, however, soon after coming to power in March 2012, gave an instant permission to establish the university. The state government gave Rs 10 crore to the university in the last budget. Minority status of the university is still in doldrums, as Azam Khan has been accusing the centre creating hurdles in this regard.
