Waris, a twenty-one-year-old Muslim man from Hussainpur village in Haryana’s Mewat district, was killed on Saturday by the Hindutva group Bajrang Dal, according to family members and locals.

Soon after the incident, a video showing Bajrang Dal members abusing and assaulting Waris and two other Muslim men inside a car went viral.

According to locals, “Cow vigilantes of Bajrang Dal attacked these Muslim youth.”

Shahid, a local claimed that Monu Manesar, known for his “cow protection group” and his deliberate attacks on Muslims, was responsible for the brutal killing of Waris.

According to the station house officer (SHO), Waris passed away following a car accident. Regarding the Hindutva group’s involvement in Waris’s murder, he characterised the allegation as “fake”.

Social activists organised a dharna after Waris’s death. One of the activists told local media that the police’s claim that Waris passed away in an accident was untrue.

“The viral video makes it crystal clear how Waris and the two other men with him are being questioned about their names and villages in a threatening manner. It is very unsettling. We demand the administration take action against those responsible for his death,” an activist said.

Waris is survived by his infant daughter and his young wife.
