The alliance between journalists and lawyers will strengthen the democracy. The way legal system is structured gives power the government to harass the journalists said Sh. Anant Nath, president of Editor’s Guild of India while addressing a seminar on ‘Media Freedom In India’ organised by the Accredited Journalists Association in collaboration with the Press Club of India.
On National Press Day, the Press Club of India declared the formation of a Legal Cell, aimed at providing legal support to journalists who are harassed by the ruling dispensation nationwide.
Nath praised the Press Club’s proactive step, commending its commitment to supporting the journalistic community.
‘Editor’s Guild of India will support Press Club in this initiative’, he declared on the occasion.
We need to stand by each other, we should not allow attacks on press and go them unchallenged, and if you will go to court and challenge them the situation will only worsen said founder-editor of The Wire, said Siddharth Varadarajan while addressing the gatherings.
The Legal Cell initiative is set to benefit journalists nationwide, offering legal assistance in cases where journalists are subjected to harassment by authorities while performing their journalistic duties. The cell aims to ensure that journalists receive legal support if they encounter obstacles or intimidation from authorities in the discharge of their professional responsibilities.
The collaboration between the Editor’s Guild and the Press Club is seen as a positive move towards fostering cooperation and solidarity within the media fraternity.
