Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Tuesday, expressed his support for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and criticized opposition parties for purportedly instigating minority communities against it.
This statement by the Prime Minister follows the 22nd Law Commission’s decision to seek public opinions and engage with religious organizations concerning the UCC within a 30-day period.
Addressing BJP workers in Bhopal on Tuesday after flagging off five Vande Bharat trains, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “Today people are being instigated in the name of UCC. How can the country be run on two (laws)? The Constitution also talks of equal rights…Supreme Court has also asked to implement UCC.”
Additionally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Opposition of opposing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for the sake of “vote bank politics.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech follows closely after the Law Commission’s initiative to gather opinions from citizens and religious organizations regarding the formulation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Opposition parties and Muslim groups have been actively opposing the UCC, arguing that it infringes upon the constitutional right to religious freedom. They contend that implementing a uniform code across all personal laws would disregard the diverse religious practices and customs followed by different communities in India.
The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) aims to establish a single set of laws applicable to all religious communities in India, covering areas such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption. Advocates of the UCC, often associated with Hindu nationalist groups, have been campaigning for its implementation for many years. However, minorities and some religious groups express concerns that the UCC could be perceived as the imposition of Hindu laws and could potentially undermine the rights and practices of non-Hindu communities.
