A recent incident in Mumbai led to the arrest of four individuals accused of insulting the Israeli flag in South Mumbai. The arrests came after alleged incidents of flag desecration were reported on social media, with authorities closely monitoring online activities since the recent conflict between Israel and Hamas.
A senior Mumbai police officer issued a stern warning, stating, “Social media has been under surveillance since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas conflict, and any attempts to disrupt peace and violate the law will be dealt with firmly.”
Despite these arrests, demonstrations in support of Palestinians have continued in various Indian states and major cities, including Jammu and Kashmir, Kolkata, and Bangalore. Several political parties have also extended their support, with Tamil Nadu’s capital, Chennai, set to witness protests on Thursday.
In Uttar Pradesh, police in Hamirpur arrested a Muslim religious leader on charges of “spreading hatred” due to his alleged support for Palestine. The police claim that the religious leader, Sahil Ansari, expressed his support for Palestine on social media and encouraged people to gather in the mosque. The authorities asserted that some of the comments in his posts posed a threat to peace. Ansari was presented in a local court and remanded for 14 days.
Four students from Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh were also arrested for organizing pro-Palestinian processions. This follows a warning issued by Hindu nationalist leader and state minister Yogi Adityanath, who emphasized that no statements or actions favoring Palestine would be tolerated during the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, further intensifying the situation.
The demonstrations were not limited to Uttar Pradesh, as dozens of students, teachers, and intellectuals from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi University, and Jamia Millia Islamia rallied in support of Palestine at Delhi’s iconic Jantar Mantar area. At least 60 protesters were detained by the police and transported to a different location. The protesters chanted slogans such as “Peace for Palestine” and “Gaza, we are with you.”
Opposition parties also expressed their solidarity with Palestine. A 20-member delegation in Delhi met with the Palestinian ambassador and issued a formal statement. Palestinian Ambassador Adnan Abulheja expressed hope for India’s role in preventing the siege of Gaza and encouraging the Israeli government to facilitate humanitarian aid to the people in Gaza. He stated, “We hope that India will play a good role in preventing the siege of Gaza and will push the Israeli government to help our people reach humanitarian aid in Gaza.”
