The Prime Minister’s recent remarks targeting Muslims suggest a strategic shift prompted by his perceived electoral setbacks in the ongoing national elections in India. This shift appears as a deliberate attempt to exploit communal sentiments for political gain, reflecting a sense of desperation. Concurrently, Hindutva leaders express discontent with the Congress manifesto’s emphasis on equity, revealing their aversion to principles of fairness.
The Hindutva agenda, rooted in the desire to establish a Manuwaad-based system, vehemently opposes any notion of ‘equity.’ This stance is indicative of their broader agenda to amend or replace the Constitution, which upholds principles of equity and social justice while rejecting discrimination. The Constitution’s commitment to equality and social justice, particularly for marginalized communities, is evident through provisions such as Reservation, a mechanism aimed at rectifying historical injustices. The Hindutva camp’s hostility towards such measures underscores their resistance to inclusive governance and their preference for a discriminatory societal framework.
What Congress Manifesto says on equity
The Congress manifesto strongly advocates for equityand pledges to end discrimination. It states, “Congress has been the most vocal and active champion of the progress of backward and oppressed classes and castes over the last seven decades. However, caste discrimination remains a stark reality. SC, ST, and OBC communities have not yet caught up with the rest and continue to lag behind. Despite constituting nearly 70 per cent of India’s population, their representation in high-ranking professions, services, and businesses remains disproportionately low. No progressive society should tolerate such inequality or discrimination based on ancestry, leading to the denial of equal opportunities.”
The manifesto outlines a program to address historical inequities, including measures to bridge gaps in education, employment, and economic opportunities for marginalized communities. It emphasizes the importance of creating a more inclusive and equitable society where every individual has a fair chance to succeed, regardless of their background.
Why BJP Opposes Equity?
It is widely known that the RSS promotes Brahminism, advocating for racial supremacy. Its literature and founders have often praised figures like Hitler and Mussolini, known for their supremacist ideologies. BJP leaders openly criticize the Constitution and declare their intention to abolish reservations. This explains their agitation over the Congress manifesto, which proposed a nationwide Socio-Economic and Caste Census to assess the socio-economic status of different castes and sub-castes.
With such reverence for Manusmriti, the RSS sought its influence on India’s Constitution. On November 30, 1949, its publication Organiser stated, “Manu’s laws predate those of Lycurgus of Sparta or Solon of Persia. Yet, our constitutional experts disregard this fact.” This likely referenced Ambedkar’s opposition to Manusmriti; he famously burned it in 1927.
The RSS’s Dislike for Buddhism and Jainism
The RSS harbors a strong aversion towards Buddhism and Jainism due to their emphasis on principles of equity. Golwalkar went as far as to claim that Buddhism “betrayed the mother society and religion” and that it was essentially eradicated from its roots. This viewpoint underscores the RSS’s vision of an India where Buddhism holds no significant place.
Hindutva’s Stance Against Women’s Equity
Mohan Bhagwat’s speeches often reflect a desire to restrict women’s roles, but this sentiment is not limited to him; the entire Hindutva ideology has a history of such views. Some Hindutva figures have even supported practices like sati. In 1999, senior VHP leader Giriraj Kishore remarked that women choosing to self-immolate on their husbands’ pyres posed no issue.
Vinayak Chaturvedi traces this stance back to figures like Tilak, who opposed educating Hindu women, fearing it would lead to “immorality” and “insubordination,” thus challenging traditional Hindu norms. This historical context sheds light on Hindutva’s resistance to women’s empowerment and its preference for maintaining patriarchal structures that limit women’s rights and opportunities.
Historians attribute the spread of Islam to the Varna system
Many historians argue that the conversion of Indian masses to Islam was influenced by the prevalent social injustices in Indian society. In his book “The Rise of Islam and the Bengal Frontier, 1204-1760,” historian Eaton provides valuable insights into the spread of Islam in Bengal. Eaton’s analysis highlights factors such as trade networks, the influence of Sufi orders, and social interactions as pivotal drivers of Islam’s expansion in the region, challenging the perception that conquest alone was the primary catalyst.
Periyar had also suggested to Babasaheb Ambedkar to choose Islam
Rationalist Thanthai Periyar (father) had said that if one wanted to annihilate caste in 15 minutes and live with self-respect, then Islam is the only solution. Periyar had also suggested to Babasaheb Ambedkar to choose Islam as a religion for emancipation.

‘I learned one thing in my eight years’ experience with the Dalit movement through Dalit Camera assignments, and my research on caste for the last 14 years. Babasaheb Ambedkar was right when he said that leaving Hinduism is the only way to fight caste. Following his footsteps, I chose to leave Hinduism and embrace Islam on 30 January 2020 in Kodungallur, a historical town in Kerala’s Thrissur district. Kodungallur where the first Indian mosque was built, said Raees Mohammed’ (previously Ravichandran Bathran). Raees is the the founder editor of Dalit Camera news website which documents life from the perspective of Dalit, Adivasi and Bahujan people and other minorities living in India.
