West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stated that people must verify that their names are on the voter list, or they may be transferred to detention camps in the name of the NRC.

“The voter list is currently being updated and corrected. This procedure will be carried out till December 5. I urge everyone to ensure that their name is on the voter list, or they will be sent to a detention camp if their name is not on the NRC,” Banerjee said.

“They are sometimes told that they are not Indian citizens, so how did they vote if they are not?,” she said.

“You became Prime Minister as a result of our votes, and today you say you will grant us citizenship rights. What does this mean? Aren’t you insulting us?”,” she added.

Earlier this month, Sukanta Majumdar, the head of the West Bengal BJP, had said that CM Mamata’s opposition to the state’s implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act would be equivalent to contesting the nation’s sovereignty.
