Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoband have booked Hindu supremacist Madhu Kishwar and four others for spreading misinformation in a sensitive case dating back to 2017.
Kishwar on 20 July shared a video clip on Twitter saying that a Muslim man deliberately came under the wheels of a truck that was part of Kavadiya procession in Deoband. In another tweet, she alleged the police have booked Hindu Kavad pilgrims for the same. This message was spread by many other social media handles as well.

The Saharanpur Police issued a clarification on the same day stating that the incident had taken place in 2017 and legal action was taken in the case. The police urged social media users to delete this “misleading” post.
Four days later, the police said that they have registered an FIR against Kishwar and four others as they did not delete their posts despite being requested by the police. The FIR has been lodged under Section 505(2) of the Indian Penal Code (publishing or circulating a rumour with intent to incite a class or community), and Section 66(D) of the Information Technology Act.
