New Delhi: Alleging ‘malpractices’ in the just concluded general elections, the Bahujan Mukti Party (BMP) has organized nation-wide protest against the Election Commission of India on Sunday demanding scrapping of electronic voting machines for elections.
Addressing a protest demonstration at Jantar Mantar here, BMP leaders said EVMs are under cloud as the party has been receiving many complaints from its units across the country that they were manipulated to tilt the election results. Submitting a memorandum to the President of India, they said EC’s role has become ‘suspicious’ in conducting free and fair elections. Under the slogan of “Save the Democracy”, the party organized protest demonstration in 535 districts of the 29 states to bring voice of people against the EC. Party leader Arun Kumar Yadav said developed countries like US and EU nations all have shunned EVMs for elections because these are not reliable for free and fair elections. US and Europe are technologically more advanced than India but jettisoned the use of EVMs, he added.
Echoing his views, Dr Ratan Singh averred that it is being suspected that EC did not play fair role in conducting the elections that is why many complaints are pouring in to the party. Party general secretary y Dr Sabhiuddin Akmal said there is no arrangement in the EVMs to verify vote cast by a person. It is the biggest discrepancy in voting machines that cannot be rectifying, he added.
Party has announced that it will stage protest and take out rallies on June 29 against EC across the country. It also planned massive rallies in state capitals of the 29 states in the month of August.
BMP Delhi State president Rajesh Parjapati, Pokhraj Chouhan and other leaders also spoke on the occasion. They said the recent election results have thrown many surprises and it is not good for a healthy democracy. Now it is a duty of every Indian citizen particularly, weaker sections and minorities to come forward for saving the Indian democracy and raised their voice against the EC, they said.
