Days after Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warned against ‘any activity against the central government’s stand’ on the Israel-Palestine war, a post on social media purportedly supporting Palestine has fueled ‘hostility.’ A Maulvi was arrested last week in Hamirpur for allegedly ‘exaggerating,’ according to the Indian Express report. The arrested Maulvi has been identified as Sohail Ansari, aged 23.
On Friday, October 13, Ansari, along with another Maulvi Atif Chaudhary, were booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 153A, which pertains to promoting enmity between two groups, and 505(2), which deals with inciting or promoting enmity, hatred, or ill will between classes. Chaudhry is currently absconding, and a case has been registered against him.
Meanwhile, a separate case was also registered against a doctor in Bareilly for making objectionable remarks against Muslims on WhatsApp in connection with the Israel-Palestine conflict. As of now, the doctor, identified as Dr. Parminder Maheshwari, who works at a private hospital in Bareilly, has not been arrested.
“We have arrested Ansari, and raids are on to find other accused,” said a senior Hamirpur police officer.
According to the police, Maulvi Sohail Ansari had posted on social media expressing his support for Palestine. In another post, he had allegedly called people to gather at a mosque. The officer noted, “The accused used social media, also made some comments to the media, which are prohibited and may create law and order problems.”
In the case of Dr. Parminder Maheshwari, he has been booked under Section 153A of the IPC, related to promoting enmity between groups, and 295A, pertaining to intentional and malicious acts intended to destroy one’s religion or religious beliefs.
