Swami Prasad Maurya, leader of the Samajwadi Party, has sparked a controversy fire by making a comment about Ramcharitmanas following the offensive remarks made against Ramcharat Manas by Bihar Education Minister Dr. Chandrasekhar.
Former state minister and once close ally of the BJP, Maurya, said that women and Dalits had been insulted in the Ramcharitmanas.
“The book compares Shudras and women to animals and encouraged beating them,” Maurya said adding that religion should treat everyone equally but the book says otherwise.
“The books says that Shudras shouldn’t be respected even if they are scholars,” he said.
He also said that Ramcharitmanas is not a religious book and Tulsidas himself has acknowledged that in the past.
“Tulsidas wrote this book for his own enjoyment,” said Maurya.
He described the book as gibberish and junk and said that the government had to outlaw it.

In January of last year, just before the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, Swami Prasad Maurya left the BJP and joined the Samajwadi Party (SP).
Earlier this month, Bihar Education Minister Chandrashekhar stirred a controversy after he asserted that Ramcharitmanas “spreads enmity in the society”.
