Aligarh: In the wake of BJP-led central government’s opposition to the minority character of Aligarh Muslim University, the AMU fraternity said they are all united on the minority status issue and they will fight for it till the end. To take the stock of situation after the Modi government’ affidavit in the Supreme Court declaring that the AMU is not the minority institution, the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University, Lt. Gen. Zameer Udin Shah on Tuesday convened an emergency meeting here. Shedding light on the developments pertaining to the minority status case, the Vice Chancellor reiterated that it was the first priority of the University and the AMU is making meaningful efforts to this effect.
The VC presided over a joint meeting of members of AMU Court, Executive Council, Academic Council and office bearers of various teaching and non-teaching bodies. It took the stock of situation following the hearing of AMU minority status case in the Supreme Court of India.
Expressing unstinted faith in country’s judiciary, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Brig. S. Ahmad Ali said that AMU has already made adequate preparation regarding this case and we will put up our stand with full confidence in the next hearing of the case in the Supreme Court, which is slated for April 4.
All the members present in the meeting expressed full solidarity with the University administration and made appropriate suggestions regarding the minority status case. It was decided that cooperation of all sections will be sought in this matter.
The jettisoning the previous UPA government’s stand on AMU, the Modi government said in the Supreme Courton Monday by declaring that the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) was never intended by Parliament to be a Muslim university .
AMU is and will remain a minority institution and we hope Hon’ble Supreme Court will give its verdict in favour of AMU soon.We have to remain calm and united.
What does minority status mean? Does it mean it’s only open for Muslims?
it means illiterate muslims will get degrees due to them being muslim.
@hindu…..so again is your arse on fire…coz of your bastardized and jealous mindset…a typical hindutwadi coward.
Loosely speaking Minority status given to institutions in india means that special rules in the governance of the institution can be laid in order to uplift students belonging to the minority. Particularly speaking, AMU doesn’t discriminate between students belonging to different caste and religions, in providing admission and in other areas. Minority students do not form majority in most of the courses being run by the university.
