ALIGARH,9 Feb 2016 : Women’s College of the Aligarh Muslim University today organized a function to mark the Founder’s Day to commemorate Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, who is fondly remembered as Papa Mian. Brig. S. Ahmad Ali, Pro-Vice Chancellor, AMU presided over the function.
Paying rich tributes to Papa Mian and his wife, Waheed Jahan, popularly known as Ala Bi amongst Women’s College students, Brig. Ali recalled their contributions to the female education. He said that “the College with a strength of more than 2700 students, is a material transformation of their dreams”, which has played a significant role in educating a large number of girls so far. He said that the University administration pays special attention to the development and progress of the college and presently a number of development projects are on to give a fillip to academic and extra-curricular activities. He confirmed that a Swimming Pool is being constructed at the grounds of the Abdullah Primary School with a budget of Rs. 2.5 Crore while the kitchen of the Abdullah hall is also being renovated and equipped with advance facilities.
Brig. Ali said that the quality of research works of faculty members of an institution meaningfully contribute to its ranking and Women’s College teachers should work hard to give their best to help AMU achieve first position amongst universities of the country.
Brig. Ali also gave away various awards to the students for their performance in academics. Ms. Anam Mujeeb received Dr. Zakir Husain Award, while Ms. Aiman Hasan and Ms. Bushra Ahmad got Mrs. M. J. Haider and Padma Bhushan Papa Mian Award respectively.
Presenting the annual report, Principal of the College, Prof. Naeema Gulrez said that the College has come a long way with a remarkable success report in academics. She said that during the last few years, a number of developmental and construction projects have been undertaken including the upgradation of College Library and construction of new and Smart Classrooms.
Appreciating the University administration’s supportive role, Prof. Naima Gulrez said that a 2.4 Crore grant has been made available by the University administration for the construction of classrooms and staff rooms.
Elaborating on the achievements of the students and faculty members, Prof. Naima Gulrez said that Cadet Arshi Gupta has been awarded with the Outstanding Cadet Medal by the Additional Director General of NCC Directorate of UP while more than 30 teachers presented their research papers at national and international conferences and seminars.
On this occasion, Pro-Vice Chancellor Brig. Ali released the College Magazine and a score of books authored by the college teachers.
Ms. Nida Hasan conducted the programme while Dr. Sheila Shahab proposed a vote of thanks.
