Kasaragod: Two days after the brutal killing of young activist of the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) here, Kerala police have intensified the investigation to nab the killers following protest by the local people in the area and SDPI’s bandh call.
Slain activist was identified as Zainul Abid (24) who was attacked by a gang with sharp weapons at his family shop in Chakkar Bazaar of Kasaragod on Monday night. It is said that Abid was about to leave his father’s shop in Chakkar Bazaar for home when the gang suddenly stormed into the shop and attacked him. Hearing screams of Abid, some nearby shopkeepers ran to help him but the gang had finished its task and escaped in the darkness. Abid was immediately rushed to a private hospital in a very critical condition. Later, he was shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru. But he succumbed to his injures as his mortal remains were shifted to Pariyaram Medical College Hospital in Kerala.
Meanwhile, Police claimed that they have identified the attackers who stabbed young activist in the presence of his father Muhammed Kunhi. Kunhi told the police, who is a resident of Thalangara, that there were at least five men who barged into his shop and inflicted fatal wound on his son. A senior police officer said police would shortly catch the accused as they have identified the location of the attackers.
Kerala is known for political violence as Abid’s cold-blooded murder has sparked widespread protest in the area which has considerable influence of SDPI. Sensing this, police have urged the people to maintain peace and calm in the area.
