New Delhi: The fast changing situation in Iraq and the Middle East has attracted the Urdu press in a big way as major Urdu papers are being replete with lead articles and editorials on Iraq blaming Iraqi ruler Nouri Maliki for the current crisis.
The Akhbar-e Mashriqe in its editorial on Thursday said the ISIS has declared caliphate in its controlled area of Iraq and Syria and Abubakar Al Baghdadi was nominated as the new caliph. In his 20 minute audio message, Baghdadi has spelt out his policies and said that the Islamic State will try to help those Muslims who are being subjected to atrocities. He specially mentioned Myanmar and some African countries in his speech. He also declared that ISIS is against the concept of ‘nation-state’ and ‘monarchy’. This announcement will certainly ruffle the feathers of dynastic Arab rulers. Now, Saudi Arabia, which is being said supporting ISIS, is feeling the heat of ISIS’s ideological moorings. However, the happenings in Iraq and Syria are much to be blamed on Shia rulers of these countries. The puppet regime of Nouri al-Maliki acted as a ruler of Shias only as there were no other communities in Iraq. Maliki refused to step down for forming a board–based government in Iraq that would have defused the crises to some extent. The most despotic and brutal dictator in Syria is also still clinging to power by killing thousands of innocents. These rulers are real problems which are getting monetary and military support from Iran. It seems that latest development puts the Middle East on new threshold as the region was divided into pieces by the colonial masters.
Abdurrahman al-Rashed in Hamara Samaj writes that US initially was not happy with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, but the latter managed to win his support by assuring tough on terror and holding elections on time. He sent his forces towards Anbar claiming that this was to fight ‘terrorism’, and he also announced the elections date. The US gave him diplomatic support and sold him the best of its weapons: Hellfire missiles, drones and Apache helicopters. A year before that, Maliki bought Russia’s support with a $4.3 billion arms contract – the biggest military deal for Russia in the Middle East since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Afterwards, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made his famous statement that the two countries share similar positions on regional issues and increased Russia’s support for the regime of Bashar al-Assad. With this strategy, Maliki paved the way to govern Iraq by making sure that three powers were on his side: the U.S., Russia and Iran. But Maliki’s problem is that his concept of governance resembles that of Saddam Hussein. Now Maliki is fighting to defend his existence and not to defend Iraq’s security. The Americans, like many national Iraqi parties, have started to feel that Maliki is the problem and not the solution. The majority of Shiites are also not happy with Maliki. Most Shiite leaders and other Iraqi political party leaders have called for immediately forming a government acceptable to everyone, in the strongest political move against Maliki thus far.
Writing in Inquilab daily, Khalid Shaikh says the US follows two policies in Middle East: one to serve the interest of Israel and the other to control oil and natural gas in the region. After the collapse of USSR, it made Islam next target. Whatever is happening in Iraq is the gift of US to the Muslim world. No doubt, the establishment of Khilafah (Caliphate) has aggravated the problems in the Middle East as western powers will again intervene in the region militarily. It must be noted that a caliph, according to Islam, is always elected. That, no one is supposed to present his stake for the post; rather council of Ulema will elect one for the position. Setting up of such a ‘State’ would only make situation worst. Obviously, the crises emerged after establishment of caliphate are not going to subsidies due to oil price hike and ‘a new wave of terror’. Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Mailiki is responsible for the crises. Had he taken inclusive approach, the situation would not have slipped out of his hand.
