On Monday, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, social media platform Twitter witnessed a controversy as the name of Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, trended on the platform.
Right-wing Twitter accounts tweeted slogans like ‘Nathuram Godse Zindabad’ and ‘Nathuram Godse Amar Rahe,’ translating to ‘Long Live Nathuram Godse.’ Some individuals even labelled Godse as a ‘patriot’ and ‘hero’.
“This country has become independent because of the sacrifice of heroes, not because of Gandhi’s Ahimsa Pandit Nathuram Godse Amar Rahe,”said a social media user named Proud Bharitya.
Another user named Himanshu, said, “Nathuram Godse country will always remembered your sacrifice, you’re true Sanatani.” (sic)

“Why do Gandhians hate Godse? He gave Gandhi the death that Gandhi wished on Hindus and Jews while advising us to celebrate our murderers. Shouldn’t a true Gandhian then celebrate Godse? Because he did to Gandhi what Ghandhi deeply desired to be done to others? Bloody hypocrites!,” wrote another user named Lokesh Chandra.

Nathuram Godse assassinated Mahatma Gandhi on January 30, 1948, in New Delhi, and was sentenced to death for the crime. His actions have long been a subject of controversy in India, with many regarding him as a terrorist and a symbol of hatred, while others have portrayed him as a patriot.
In 2019, BJP Lok Sabha MP Pragya Thakur caused controversy by praising Nathuram Godse as a “true patriot.” While the party’s top leadership, including PM Narendra Modi, reprimanded her, they did not remove her as a candidate, contributing to the mainstreaming of Godse.
