The first shipment of fresh foodstuffs from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has successfully reached Israel via a newly established land bridge, bypassing the traditional Red Sea route. Reports from the Israeli Walla! news website confirmed the trial’s success, with 10 trucks covering a distance of approximately 2,000 km over two days and a few hours.
This land bridge, serving as an alternative to the Red Sea, was initiated due to concerns over the Yemeni blockade affecting maritime passages. Israeli media previously disclosed an agreement between the ports of Dubai, UAE, and Haifa, Israel, aiming to mitigate the perceived threat to maritime trade.
The world’s second-largest shipping company, A.P. Moller-Maersk, recently announced the suspension of all container traffic through the Red Sea in response to an attack by Yemeni Armed Forces on one of its container ships in the Bab al-Mandab Strait.
Yemeni Armed Forces, in a bold move, targeted the Maersk Gibraltar cargo ship, alleging its connection to the Israeli occupation. Despite conflicting reports on the impact, Maersk vessels in the area have been instructed to pause their journeys, raising concerns about the stability of maritime routes in the region.
Furthermore, the Yemeni Armed Forces have extended their actions to include attacks on other vessels bound for Israeli ports. Brigadier General Yahya Saree declared that ships, irrespective of nationality, heading to Israeli ports will be targeted until Israel lifts its blockade on Gaza, allowing for the passage of essential supplies.
These developments come amidst a worsening situation for the Israeli occupation, with Yemeni Armed Forces implementing a new equation after a U.S. veto on a UN Security Council ceasefire in Gaza. This equation expands the ban on ships heading to Israel to include the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea, intensifying pressure on Israel to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
