Chennai: The popular Tamil film actress Monika who is known for her films like ‘Azhagi’ and ‘Silanthi’ has converted to Islam and her new name is M G Rahima. The actress has acted in more than 70 films as heroine and child artist.
Monika’s parents are Christians and the actress says hereafter she won’t be acting in films. Monika also says that there is no selfishness in her decision to convert to Islam.
Monika started her career as a child artist in Avasara Police 100. She is also popular in other South Indian film industries like Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.
She conducted a press meet at RKV Studio on Friday where she said, “I started my career in cinema from child artist, completed 70 films in Cinema Industry. I have done with your full support. The word thanks is not enough for your affections”.
She added, “I don’t convert for the reason of love of money,i am not such a person. I like Islamic principles so that I converted to Islam. I will intimate about my marriage to media once it will be arranged by my parents and I really thank to my dad for his full support. I am not convinced to change my name but I have changed my name , it is M.G.Raheema (M – Maruthi Raj (father), G-Gracy (mother)). Hereafter I won’t act in the film, it gives some pain but I don’t change my mind”
The actress added that she was planning to tie the knot soon. The actress has also issued her new photographs in Islamic Abaya.
Monika is the latest to join the bandwagon of those who converted to Islam, before her the Oscar winner musician AR Rahman and popular musician Yuvan Shankar Raja had also converted Islam in recent times.

@pakistan: I found it interesting that you mentioned about Spain but not about other places, such as Iran (where they attempted to uproot the Persians from their cultural identity through organized discrimination and genocides – there are now more Zoroastrians in India than Iran) or even India (where a number of Muslim rulers prided themselves for demolishing “idols” and killing their “worshipers”), or even Pakistan and Bangladesh, where the percentage of minority population has unreasonably dwindled since the partition in 1947 (this is when the Muslim population continues to outgrow Hindus in India)?
Can you also do a bit of research and find out what are the countries which 1) prohibit or restrict one’s conversion to another faith, and 2) prohibit minority faiths from spreading their beliefs or proselytizing to the majority (like what Zakir Naik is doing very freely in India and other countries)?

@Syed: This is the problem with you people. 1) What qualifications does anyone require to see that certain countries TODAY explicitly say in their own legislation that converting to another faith and proselytizing attempts are punishable? These are all WRITTEN in their constitution and you can access this information anywhere. They are not hidden nor fabricated.
2) The same goes for my comment about Zakir Naik and all other preachers. The fact that he is allowed to travel freely despite having publicly (mis)quoted other faiths’ holy books to spread his message should tell you how tolerant India is towards people like him. There is no compulsion in religion
Faith is something cherished at heart. So the true nature of faith is quite unfathomable. Man can be got to adopt or renounce one belief only by persuasion. If force is used, belief may be feigned rather than really held at heart. Once force ceases to be used, the real belief is declared though it used to be kept secret.
What is the benefit of the use of force to propagate one religion? The only benefit is the outward profession of rather than genuine belief in this religion. Such a result of the use of force for religious purposes is not desired by Islam or any other religion.
The advocate of a right, reasonable belief does not need to use force to compel people to accept it. Allah has made His true religion such a reasonable, palatable belief which people are more likely to accept quite willingly.
Therefore, Islam does not compel people of other faiths to convert. It has given them complete freedom to retain their own faith and not to be forced to embrace Islam. This freedom is documented in both the Qur’an and the prophetic teachings known as Sunnah.
Allah addresses the Prophet Muhammad in the Qur’an (interpretation of the meaning):
“If it had been your Lord’s will, they would all have believed – all of who are on earth! Will you then compel humankind, against their will, to believe?” [Yunus 10:99]
“Let there be no compulsion in religion; truth stands clear from error: whoever rejects false gods and believes in Allah has grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold that never breaks. And Allaah hears and knows all things.” [Al-Baqarah 2:256]
There is only one thing one needs to do to be recognized as a legal muslim in the sight of the law and the believers; and that is, without any force or coercion from anyone and of one’s own free choice and will, to declare that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah Alone and that Mohamed (peace be upon him) is Allah’s slave-servant and His Last and Final Messenger.
Edwin Calgary, an American scholar, wrote about this verse, ‘There is a verse in the Qur’an that is filled with truth and wisdom, and it is known to all Muslims. Everyone else should know it as well; it is the one that says there is no compulsion in religion.’

@Naushad: I agree that a number of verses in the Koran talk against compulsion in religion, but if you look around (and don’t take my words for it), compulsions are taking place in a number of countries and in many ways. Please do a research and inform us what are the countries that 1) prohibit or restrict one from converting to another faith, and 2) prohibit minority communities from spreading their faith openly or proselytize?
In Malaysia, for example, a Muslim can only convert to another faith if his/her application is approved by the sharia court, and the only times applications are approved if they were a convert before but under false pretense but never actually practise the Islamic faith. Also, the legislation specifically states that to receive special privileges as a Malay, one has to be a Muslim (i.e.: if you convert to another faith, you will lose these privileges and be a second-class citizen – again if the court approves it).
Maybe you should create a better awareness among your fellow Muslims first?

@Peace Lover: First of all, I have studied Islam and read the Quran, and I know that as much as there are verses about tolerance towards non-Muslims, there are also verses implying otherwise. That you personally choose one verse over the other does not invalidate this fact, it’s simply a variance in interpretation.
Speaking about people who converted to Islam after reading the Quran, well there are also a lot of people who left Islam after reading the Quran, including into atheism (I know some of them personally). The difference, however, is there are no Christian, Hindu, or Buddhist countries in the entire world that specifically categorize conversion to another faith as a crime (only the Holy See requires that its citizens are Roman Catholics, but this is because this “country” is essentially a church, not a country). In many Islamic countries, spreading non-Islamic teaching to Muslims is also a crime, while doing the other way around is permitted, even endorsed by the government.
With regards to Muslims’ rule in India, I too have made efforts to learn both sides of the story, and unfortunately to you, even a number of historical accounts written in the same period by Muslims indicate that at least some Muslim rulers endorse discrimination, intimidation (e.g.: forcing them to pay higher taxes/jizya), and up to persecution against non-Muslims (and Sufi Muslims who they considered as heretics), with pride. The same also happened in Persia/Iran, another one of the ancient world’s greatest civilization.
Perhaps it’s you who should re-read your history with an open mind. I challenge you to prove me wrong.

Let me ask you this: do you know how many Muslims get killed by fellow Muslims every single year? Of course you don’t, because their lives matters only when Muslims are killed or treated badly by non-Muslims. It is more convenient for you to simply point a finger to others like the Americans and Israelis then to ask why they still do kill each other in the name of faith.
Secondly, what you mentioned does not negate whatever I have said above, that in many Islamic countries, it is legal to detain and prosecute people for converting to another faith and for proselytizing others. It is written in their laws. Prove me wrong, then talk as much as you want.

Yes, there are castes in Hindu communities, but the same also applies in all other communities, even among non-Hindu South Asians. Plus, ANY country led by a monarch is essentially upholds caste system, because one can never be a king or a queen unless you are born into the royal family. And none of the present day monarchies are Hindus, most of them are Christians, Muslim, and a few Buddhists.

But u ignored one important fact that none of these discriminations are condoned or permitted by Islam while in Hinduism the religion itself prescribes and stresses the caste system. Conversion is a personal matter(for me she went from one pothole to another one)…However the reaction of muslims here, it seems Muslim esteem at this point of time in history is at such a low that they will jump to cling to any news which talks to a religious conversion…

The but-natural outcome of intricate play of mutation and selection(survival of the fittest) is a complex form which we call as diversity of life. There is absolutely no doubt in scientific community today as to how complex beings came about from much simpler beings through a process called evolution.
Another layman argument(for public consumption) is that Had the world been intelligently designed, it would have been a perfect world…But the more you know about universe and the world around, the more it is evident that it is horribly-horribly designed. In fact if i had the powers of that imaginary GOD/Allah, even i would have designed world much better. The so called Allah(if at all he exists in your world) is such a bad engineer that a college drop out can do a better job given all the power at his disposal…Forget about universe, even the life on this tiny planet is marred by errors in design…For e.g the eye which we call the perfect organ, can see less than 1% of the available spectrum…One such design error is also found in Giraffe’s Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve. There are many more such examples…I think all you need is to brush up your knowledge of evolution and you are all set to leave the cult of Islam(for your own good).

LOGICAL CONCEPT OF GOD
My first question to you will be: “What is the definition of God?” For a person to say there is no God, he should know what is the meaning of God. If I hold a book and say that ‘this is a pen’, for the opposite person to say, ‘it is not a pen’, he should know what is the definition of a pen, even if he does not know nor is able to recognise or identify the object I am holding in my hand. For him to say this is not a pen, he should at least know what a pen means. Similarly for an atheist to say ‘there is no God’, he should at least know the concept of God. His concept of God would be derived from the surroundings in which he lives. The god that a large number of people worship has got human qualities – therefore he does not believe in such a god. Similarly a Muslim too does not and should not believe in such false gods.
If a non-Muslim believes that Islam is a merciless religion with something to do with terrorism; a religion which does not give rights to women; a religion which contradicts science; in his limited sense that non-Muslim is correct to reject such Islam. The problem is he has a wrong picture of Islam. Even I reject such a false picture of Islam, but at the same time, it becomes my duty as a Muslim to present the correct picture of Islam to that non-Muslim i.e. Islam is a merciful religion, it gives equal rights to the women, it is not incompatible with logic, reason and science; if I present the correct facts about Islam, that non-Muslim may Inshallah accept Islam.
Similarly the atheist rejects the false gods and the duty of every Muslim is to present the correct concept of God which he shall Insha Allah not refuse.

QUR’AN AND MODERN SCIENCE
The methods of proving the existence of God with usage of the material provided in the ‘Concept of God in Islam’ to an atheist may satisfy some but not all.
Many atheists demand a scientific proof for the existence of God. I agree that today is the age of science and technology. Let us use scientific knowledge to kill two birds with one stone, i.e. to prove the existence of God and simultaneously prove that the Qur’an is a revelation of God.
If a new object or a machine, which no one in the world has ever seen or heard of before, is shown to an atheist or any person and then a question is asked, ” Who is the first person who will be able to provide details of the mechanism of this unknown object? After little bit of thinking, he will reply, ‘the creator of that object.’ Some may say ‘the producer’ while others may say ‘the manufacturer.’ What ever answer the person gives, keep it in your mind, the answer will always be either the creator, the producer, the manufacturer or some what of the same meaning, i.e. the person who has made it or created it. Don’t grapple with words, whatever answer he gives, the meaning will be same, therefore accept it.

THEORY OF PROBABILITY
In mathematics there is a theory known as ‘Theory of Probability’. If you have two options, out of which one is right, and one is wrong, the chances that you will chose the right one is half, i.e. one out of the two will be correct. You have 50% chances of being correct. Similarly if you toss a coin the chances that your guess will be correct is 50% (1 out of 2) i.e. 1/2. If you toss a coin the second time, the chances that you will be correct in the second toss is again 50% i.e. half. But the chances that you will be correct in both the tosses is half multiplied by half (1/2 x 1/2) which is equal to 1/4 i.e. 50% of 50% which is equal to 25%. If you toss a coin the third time, chances that you will be correct all three times is (1/2 x 1/2 x 1/2) that is 1/8 or 50% of 50% of 50% that is 12½%.
A dice has got six sides. If you throw a dice and guess any number between 1 to 6, the chances that your guess will be correct is 1/6. If you throw the dice the second time, the chances that your guess will be correct in both the throws is (1/6 x 1/6) which is equal to 1/36. If you throw the dice the third time, the chances that all your three guesses are correct is (1/6 x 1/6 x 1/6) is equal to 1/216 that is less than 0.5 %.
Let us apply this theory of probability to the Qur’an, and assume that a person has guessed all the information that is mentioned in the Qur’an which was unknown at that time. Let us discuss the probability of all the guesses being simultaneously correct.
At the time when the Qur’an was revealed, people thought the world was flat, there are several other options for the shape of the earth. It could be triangular, it could be quadrangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, heptagonal, octagonal, spherical, etc. Lets assume there are about 30 different options for the shape of the earth. The Qur’an rightly says it is spherical, if it was a guess the chances of the guess being correct is 1/30.
The light of the moon can be its own light or a reflected light. The Qur’an rightly says it is a reflected light. If it is a guess, the chances that it will be correct is 1/2 and the probability that both the guesses i.e the earth is spherical and the light of the moon is reflected light is 1/30 x 1/2 = 1/60.
Further, the Qur’an also mentions every living thing is made of water. Every living thing can be made up of either wood, stone, copper, aluminum, steel, silver, gold, oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen, oil, water, cement, concrete, etc. The options are say about 10,000. The Qur’an rightly says that everything is made up of water. If it is a guess, the chances that it will be correct is 1/10,000 and the probability of all the three guesses i.e. the earth is spherical, light of moon is reflected light and everything is created from water being correct is 1/30 x 1/2 x 1/10,000 = 1/60,000 which is equal to about .0017%.
The Qur’an speaks about hundreds of things that were not known to men at the time of its revelation. Only in three options the result is .0017%. I leave it upto you, to work out the probability if all the hundreds of the unknown facts were guesses, the chances of all of them being correct guesses simultaneously and there being not a single wrong guess. It is beyond human capacity to make all correct guesses without a single mistake, which itself is sufficient to prove to a logical person that the origin of the Qur’an is Divine.
CREATOR IS THE AUTHOR OF THE QUR’AN
The only logical answer to the question as to who could have mentioned all these scientific facts 1400 years ago before they were discovered, is exactly the same answer initially given by the atheist or any person, to the question who will be the first person who will be able to tell the mechanism of the unknown object. It is the ‘CREATOR’, the producer, the Manufacturer of the whole universe and its contents. In the English language He is ‘God’, or more appropriate in the Arabic language, ‘ALLAH’.
QUR’AN IS A BOOK OF SIGNS AND NOT SCIENCE
Let me remind you that the Qur’an is not a book of Science, ‘S-C-I-E-N-C-E’ but a book of Signs ‘S-I-G-N-S’ i.e. a book of ayaats. The Qur’an contains more than 6,000 ayaats, i.e. ‘signs’, out of which more than a thousand speak about Science. I am not trying to prove that the Qur’an is the word of God using scientific knowledge as a yard stick because any yardstick is supposed to be more superior than what is being checked or verified. For us Muslims the Qur’an is the Furqan i.e. criteria to judge right from wrong and the ultimate yardstick which is more superior to scientific knowledge.
But for an educated man who is an atheist, scientific knowledge is the ultimate test which he believes in. We do know that science many a times takes ‘U’ turns, therefore I have restricted the examples only to scientific facts which have sufficient proof and evidence and not scientific theories based on assumptions. Using the ultimate yardstick of the atheist, I am trying to prove to him that the Qur’an is the word of God and it contains the scientific knowledge which is his yardstick which was discovered recently, while the Qur’an was revealed 1400 year ago. At the end of the discussion, we both come to the same conclusion that God though superior to science, is not incompatible with it.
SCIENCE IS ELIMINATING MODELS OF GOD BUT NOT GOD
Francis Bacon, the famous philosopher, has rightly said that a little knowledge of science makes man an atheist, but an in-depth study of science makes him a believer in God. Scientists today are eliminating models of God, but they are not eliminating God. If you translate this into Arabic, it is La illaha illal la, There is no god, (god with a small ‘g’ that is fake god) but God (with a capital ‘G’).

3) Everything is created from water…Firstly that is wrong…there are bacteria which grow in H2S(Hydrogen sulphide in a an-aerobic environment) even on earth…Secondly why was hydrogen or for that matter oxygen not mentioned…Thirdly it is not water that makes life possible,Water is there on pluto too…but there is no life… It is that single element called carbon which is the basis of life…A carbon has a strange property in that the number of molecules you can make out of carbon is larger than all other elements put together…Had it not been for carbon there would have been no life on this earth(probably in the universe too)..Why did not quoran mention this much more important fact…and now as please do not twist yet another verse of quoran to bring in carbon into discussion…

You have been wrongly indoctrinated on Islam. I suggest you to consult a learned Islamic Scholar to put your doubts to rest. The current events have nothing to do with Islam. Its all political game, just like how it used to be in the days when India was host to innumerable kingdoms and a lot of kings would venture out to expand their kingdoms, kill a lot of human beings. Imagine Ashoka the great who killed millions.
@Barkha: you need to differentiate between killing soldiers at wars and killing people ruthlessly and for other reasons, including propagating of one’s faith. Even historical records made during that time mentioned that certain Muslim rulers did use their power to suppress, discriminate against, and murder millions and millions of non-Muslim during their rules. In fact, some of them were extremely proud and had no guilt whatsoever of what they did, believing they did good deeds for their religion. So no, it is not like what you are trying to portray and stop denying this facts.
Secondly, you surely would know that many of the Muslim dynasties that ruled parts of India came from outside of the region (notably the Middle East & Central Asia) to invade the subcontinent (note that slavery as we know it did not exist in India before these people came). Islam never says to convert the other believer forcefully. Its their own choice. What I suggest you guys, at least please read other religious book if you want to understand by yourself beside what other are saying to you about other religious. Many people fear reading other religious book, I don’t understand why. Please read it is not sin. I know most of people hate ISLAM because they have not read Islamic scripture and made their own belief about Islam without reading.

I could see few posts asking that a Muslim must be freely permitted for change in religion.Point to be noted for example,If a student wants to fail in his exams,will any father permit him freely or pressurise him to study and pass in exams.Similarly (My personal view) one who embrased Islam(Truly by Heartand practice Quranic and Hadith teachings) has passed in exam and No Good person will allow him to rewrite exam wrongly and get failed in Allah’s test of this life for mankind.
My opinion: If someone who embrased Islam should prove in front of knowledgeable Mufti,the reason of his change, Iam Sure no one can prove betterness if discussed on goodness of religious facts(Quran,Hadith) and not on persons.
I hope I could convince why there is a bit strictness in change of religion in Islam.
Ultimately,anyone can embrased any religion and make here and hereafter life on his own will.He can choose right direction and get rewards or choose wrong direction and go in hell of fire.
