Dhaka : A MoU has been signed between the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh (UDB) and the University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya (USTM) on May 12, 2016 at UDB campus. The MoU was signed by the Honorable Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique on behalf of University of Dhaka and Dr P G Rao on behalf of University of Science & Technology, Meghalaya.
On the occasion, the Honorable VC of UDB Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique said that, “the University of Dhaka has MoU with several institutions and universities worldwide, but the mission of touching the lives of the common people was has not been fully realized. USTM is a peoples University”. Prof Siddique also said that they are satisfied with the track record of USTM in reaching out to people, hence they have come forward to sign MoU with the USTM. He further added that “both the North East India and Bangladesh have lot of cultural diversity and in that sense we are very similar. The need of the hour is to develop skills to live in global village as the technology has brought us very close, and it is in this context, that people to people level contact is important. The MoU with USTM will help to achieve this milestone”.
The USTM has been creating synergy towards achieving overall development in Scientific Knowledge, Research and Education. The MoU with the University of Dhaka is for a collaborative approach in enhancing the arenas of academic, research and quality education in North East India. Earlier a MoU has been signed with the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) and this MoU with the University of Dhaka will strengthen the bond of academic and research oriented collaborations with one of the oldest and reputed universities of the World. USTM, a university dedicated to avail the quality higher education, provides a road map in relation to future cooperation between the two Universities. USTM has already signed MoU with the top Indian universities like Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Delhi, Tezpur University, Gauhati University and recently joined hands with Jamia Milia Islamia (JMI) University, New Delhi. The MoU with University of Dhaka is a part of look east policy initiatives of USTM towards creating an academic relation as well as economic, research, culture, language, biodiversity, peace and brotherhood with the neighboring countries.
The chairman of ERD Foundation and the Chancellor of USTM Shri Mahbubul Hoque during the press meet in Bangladesh has made a statement to provide free education to 20 students of Bangladesh. The students can pursue free education either in the engineering college, RIST or in USTM, provided they should fulfill the criteria of being the highly meritorious students from poor background.
A team of 30 members comprising academicians and researchers led by Shri Mahbubul Hoque, the Chancellor of USTM who have been visiting Bangladesh among them the worth mentioning names are, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, CV Raman Chair Prof of Applied Science, USTM and Former VC, Gauhati University & Former Pro-VC, Tezpur University; Prof Monirul Hussain, Professor, Dept of Political Science, Gauhati University; Prof BP Sarma, Professor, Govt Ayurvedic College and many other distinguished and eminent persons from various academic and research arena. The VC of Bangladesh University of Health Science, Prof Liaqat Ali and the Director of Bangladesh Institute of Research and Rehabilitation on Diabetes, endocrine and Metabolism (BIRDEM) were present and graced the signing ceremony.
