NEW DELHI: On a day Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to the people of Kashmir asserting the Centre’s commitment to “insaniyat (humanity), jamhuriyat (democracy) and Kashmiriyat”, the Supreme Court expressed concern over the situation saying there was lack of a humane approach towards the month-long unrest in the valley.
These observations by the Apex Court were lost in the order that stayed the lodging of the FIR against a Dy SP of J&K Police. A bench of Justices P C Ghose and Amitava Roy said: “There must be a humane approach towards the problem and it is now missing. People should be treated with love and affection but it is lacking at present and it must be ensured by the government.”
The court passed the observation while hearing a plea of the state seeking stay of contempt proceedings initiated by a local court against Srinagar’s Senior SP for not registering an FIR against a DSP who had allegedly shot down a 22-year old youth, Shabir Ahmad Mir, by barging into his home on July 10.
Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the police officials on Tuesday, also pitched in briefly and told the bench that separatists were provoking the local population to attack police officers. “We are dealing with an unusual situation and we should be protected in such circumstances,” Mehta said.
Convinced with the arguments of the state government, the bench stayed the contempt proceedings against the SSP but decided to examine the circumstances under which the youth was killed. It directed the state government to investigate the case and file a report on a sealed envelope on Friday.(AGENCIES)
