By MM Special Correspondent,
Kolkata: While strongly condemning the statement of BJP leader Sidharth Nath Singh, West Bengal Muslim leaders on Saturday described his allegations as highly mischievous and baseless meant to foment communal polarization in the state ahead of assembly elections.
They said BJP and its affiliates have no agenda other than to divide people on religious and caste lines as its government at the center has failed miserably on all fronts since it came to power in 2014 because of a default election system.
It is to be mentioned, BJP secretary Sidharth Singh has tried to paint the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal as ‘pro-Muslim’. He said at a press conference on Friday that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee thinks only about 28 per cent voters and claimed that police were asked not to fire at a mob of the minority community in Malda. Singh, who is also Bengal co-incharge, said the TMC government deliberately deferred the date of immersion of Durga idols due to Moharram.
Coming down heavily on the BJP leader’s ‘falsehoods’, Shamim Ahmad, who heads Human Rights Protection Association and is an Urdu activist, said Sidharth Singh’s irresponsible utterances amply reflect anti-minority mindset of the BJP. He said Sidharth Singh’s remarks show BJP’s desperation in view of the forthcoming elections as the party is fast losing its steam in the state. He said it is also a bid to pit Hindus against Muslims in order to deflect public attention from the failures of the Modi Government. BJP, however, he said won’t be succeed in its old game of playing with sentiments of gullible masses in the state as West Bengal has a history of rejecting communal forces.
Countering his allegations point-by-point, Shamim Ahmad told Muslim Mirror that the TMC government in the state has taken some measures to uplift the minority community in the light of famed-Sachar committee recommendations which highlighted the predicament of Muslim community in West Bengal. The committee stated that Muslims account more than 28 percent of West Bengal’s total population but they lagged behind even Dalit in many social indicators as their representation in the government employment reduced to mere 2 percent.
He said chief minister Banerjee is only trying to reduce the development deficit of the minority community in the larger interest of the state as Muslims should also be part of the mainstream.
On the violent incident in Malda district, he said BJP should avoid blaming the whole community for this as it always distance when BJP or its affiliates leaders made inflammatory speeches or indulge in violence by describing them as ‘fringe elements’.
Demanding stern action against those involved in violence in Malda, Shamim Ahmad asked why did BJP adopt double standard in dealing with violence or terror act?
He said the Human Right Protection Association’s Fact Finding Report found that smuggling mafia was involved in instigating the violence in Malda as it took the advantage of protest rally organized by Muslims. It also found that the police played an exemplary role in defusing the volatile situation.
He said it was an unfortunate incident but it should not be used for political purpose. It is unfortunate that after the Malda violence, BJP national leaders including Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari and HRD Minister Smirti Irani made statements that are not good for the healthy democracy, he added.
Another Muslim leader and MP said BJP is desperate to play its pet card by whipping up communal sentiments in the state as elections are round the corner. He said all the actions and utterances of BJP’s national local leaders should be seen in this backdrop. Malda violence is only a ruse for them.
