New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party said today that the Modi Government’s ban on NDTV shows it’s inherently fascist. The government’s clear intent to run this country like a dictatorship is shameful and dangerous.
It said the ban on the New Delhi-based news channel is an open threat to all news channels in the country that if they do not toe Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s or the BJP’s line, they will face the same fate. Aam Aadmi Party believes that the news media is the fourth pillar of any democracy and their independence to freely speak the truth is of paramount importance. The party condemns this dictatorial step taken by the Modi Government.
During a press conference addressed by a senior leader and National Spokesperson of the party Sanjay Singh said, “We strongly condemn the restriction placed on the broadcast of a New Delhi-based private news channel by the Modi Government. The manner in which the Government is attempting to run this country in a dictatorial fashion poses a serious danger to India’s constitution and democratic setup.
A similar attempt to subvert democracy was made in the past by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and the effect that had on her and her party is for all to see. The media should not be prevented from speaking of the realities of this country. The Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and the media must also be allowed to exercise their rights to free speech and expression. It is highly unfortunate that the Government is trying to clamp down on the media in this fashion. This is a brazen attempt to destroy the fourth pillar of our democracy.”
